My daughter loves art, and was excited to try out the kit IDO3D gave us to try out. IDO3D hired me to try out their product with my daughter and tell you all about it. All opinions are 100% my own.
The IDO3D Kit is designed to let kids create a 3D project using special ink, a drying process, and a special glue. The kit sounded like a lot of fun; however, when we received it, it seemed a little more complicated, and left me a little hesitant to try the set. While she LOVES anything arts/crafts related and is actually advanced for her age, I wasn’t sure if she would be patient enough to complete the process of waiting on each piece to dry so she could put the project together.
Sabrye (my daughter), was ecstatic to try the kit. She went through the project book included with the kit and wanted to do all of the projects right away. My husband showed her the beginner projects (which were labeled in the book), and helped her pick out a project.
She quickly chose the flower pot project. We showed her how to use the special pens with the ink to fill in the lines to make each piece of the project. She was able to easily fill it in each piece with the gel pen; however, she didn’t evenly fill in the lines the first time (I think it’s because she was so excited to get it done), which made the project a little difficult to put together.
As Sabrye filled in each piece with the special pen, she took the spotlight to and held it close to the gel to “cure” it or dry it. The drying process didn’t seem to take too long using just the spotlight; however, when we went to put the project together there were some air bubbles and we found the inside of some of the pieces were not all the way dry. This along with some of the pieces being a little too thin was frustrating for Sabrye. She had to go back and re-do the pieces that were too thin.
Sabrye was able to finish the product and immediately ran off to take her new flower pot to her room, where she proudly placed it on her dresser. She truly enjoyed making the project, and I think it taught her that being patient is a good thing.
Overall, the IDO3D Kit is a fun kit if you want experiments for kids, but I wouldn’t recommend it as an easy craft for a kid to do. This is a time consuming project, and Sabrye got bored towards the middle of it. It could be in part to her age, or the fact that she got a little frustrated when she dried the pieces like the instructions said to, but they were still wet.
We even tried to “cure” the pieces with the light from the bottom, the top, and even let it sit out. No matter what we tried, the pieces would not dry properly. This made it difficult to put the final project together.
The IDO3D isn’t a kit to get and let your kids just have fun on their own with it. They will need your help and supervision with the ink pens. For the crafty/artsy parents who love spending days making crafts and doing projects with their kids, this is a great kit. I think if my daughter were a little older, she might not have had some of the frustrations she experienced.
If you have a child who is into arts and crafts, then I would recommend checking out IDO3D kits. There are quite a few from which to choose. Even though Sabrye was a little frustrated with it, she still enjoyed it and really liked doing it. In fact, she asked for the Butterflies and Fairies Kit!
