Mamas, think back to a time when you were pregnant. What were your fears and concerns? One of my biggest fears was not making it to the hospital in time to receive an epidural. I know it’s silly. Were you ever afraid of not having a safe birth? Were you scared you weren’t getting enough to eat to have a healthy baby? These fears seem unrealistic in America; however, in many parts of the world, this is a reality for many women. In fact, each day 800 women and 8,000 newborns die due to not having a trained professional and a clean facility in which they can give birth.

That number is horrifying to me! Do you realize that is more than 200,000 women a year and more than 2 million babies??

Kangu is a non-profit organization with a dream that every woman in the world has a safe birth. Kangu offers a unique way to get involved and help lower the number of fatalities through crowdfunding. You can go to Kangu, and see women who are currently pregnant and are in need of help. The women on Kangu come from countries like India, Nepal, and Uganda, who are all living on less than $2 a day. Since they don’t have much money, and are below the poverty line, these women cannot afford the healthcare services that are so vital to ensure a safe birth. While in the US, we can afford to get things like boric acid pills to help with our lower health, this isn’t nearly as accessible in these regions, alongside other birth concerns.

You can see women who are currently in need of health care and see their due date. You can choose which woman you would like to donate to with as little as just $10. Kangu is a first of it’s kind to fund safe births around the world, and so far has funded more than 500 safe births. Once you donate, you will receive an update once the baby is born safely. By donating just $10, you become part of her birth story!

Many of you who have been a reader of this site for a few months know that my husband went to Ethiopia in October of this past year. My husband first went to Ethiopia on a mission trip in October 2012. While he was there, he witnessed many malnourished men, women, and children. The group he was working with did a feeding clinic to try to help the families out because they couldn’t afford food to feed their families.

My husband helped measure some of the kids’ arms so they knew how much food they could give to each family. He brought the tape measure back with him and measured our two year old (at the time) daughter’s arm. He just shook his head in disbelief. I asked him what was wrong and he told me, “I knew the kids and women were very malnourished over there. Sabrye’s arm is bigger than some of the nine and ten year old kids I saw and met! Some of the pregnant women’s arms were just as small too.”

My husband was never the same after meeting the people in Ethiopia. I think once he saw firsthand the living conditions of some of the people there (living below poverty level), he could no longer just pretend like problems like this don’t exist in the world. He has a huge heart for them, and is passionate about helping in that area. In fact, we sponsor a little girl over there and part of the proceeds of this site go to an organization that helps provide medical care and food for people in Ethiopia.

We wish we could do more for people who are in situations like this every day; however, we are on a budget like most families and can only give so much. When I read about Kangu and the medical help they are giving women all over the world, I knew I had to get involved.

If you would like to donate, you can do so here. It’s easy to do so and you can give as little as $10. Your donation is tax deductible. You can even donate in honor of someone. If you choose to donate in honor of a loved one, a personalized card will be sent to them as well as a birth update, and a picture of a mama and baby after the baby has been safely delivered.

Right now, Influence Central is hosting a contest for Kangu in which you can enter to win one of five $100 donations that will be made to Kangu on your behalf. The contest is open through February 25, 2015. You can choose a social media sharing option from below to be entered.
