With the busyness of life and Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s easy to forget that we have so much to be thankful for. Even in the valleys of life, I believe that there is always something to be thankful for. It can always be worse, even when we don’t think it could be any worse. When in the valleys of life, it’s important to still be thankful even when you don’t feel like it. When you do show gratitude, it can completely change the outlook of the situation.

1. Remember the mountain tops.

When in the valleys of life, it’s easy to forget the “mountain tops” or the good times. Look back and think of the better times where you had a lot to be thankful for. When thinking of those times, it can remind you of some of the things that you can still be thankful for in your life. Sometimes I even write these down, so I can look back on them.

2. Start each morning counting your blessings.

When you start your morning naming off a few blessings in your life, it puts you in a completely different mood and sets you up to have a good day. You don’t even have to spend a lot of time doing this, and you can “count blessings” that are small. Small blessings are still blessings.

3. Look at life through a different lens.

Almost every time I’m having a bad day, Landrye (my youngest daughter) will come ask me if she can play with play-doh, have a lollipop, or go outside to help her daddy with yard work (depending on what mood she is in). Unless we are about to eat dinner, I normally tell her yes. When I tell her yes, she immediately lights up, gives me a big hug, and tells me “Thank you, Mommy!!” Her gratitude reminds me that if she can be thankful for something as small as a lollipop or playing with play-doh, I can be thankful for the little things in life.

4. Have items to remind you to be thankful.

Put reminders in your house, vehicle, and office to remind you to be thankful. Whether it’s a gratitude journal, some quotes or verses on index cards placed on a mirror or refrigerator, or a tribe bracelet, it helps to have items strategically placed so you have the reminders in front of you to be thankful.
