At the beginning of a new year, most people make resolutions to save money, lose weight, or even learn a new hobby or skill. If one of your goals is to save money, there are a lot of easy ways you can do that this year. I know, when a lot of people think of saving money, they think of using coupons. While that is a great way, it’s not the only way to save money. There are other things you can do such as installing utility meters, this will help you keep track of how much you’re spending on bills in the home and over time can save you money. I’ve learned that you can easily save money on laundry with a few simple changes. Once you make the changes you will start seeing some extra change in your pocket and less in the, well, dryer.
5 Ways to Save Money on Laundry:
1. Wash only full loads.
When you wash only full loads of clothes, you are using the washing machine less. Using the washing machine less is less electricity, which is more money in your pocket. So, instead of washing four small loads of towels throughout the week, wash one or two large loads.
2. Skip the dryer, and hang clothes up to dry.
I know it’s not always possible to hang clothes out to dry; however, when it is sunny hanging them out to dry can save you quite a bit of money on your electric bill. You can also use a drying rack like this to dry tops and dresses if you can’t hang the whole load out to dry. When you’re not using the drying rack, it easily folds up to stash it away.
3. Use vinegar instead of fabric softener.
You can use a little bit of vinegar instead of fabric softener to soften your clothes. Your clothes will not smell like pickles either! Not only is vinegar a lot cheaper, but it will also make your towels fluffy.
4. Make your own laundry detergent.
If you like making your own soap or deodorant, you may enjoy making your own laundry detergent. By making your own, you can save quite a bit of money. Here is an awesome recipe for DIY Laundry Detergent here. If you’re not into making your own detergent, stocking up on laundry detergent at the lowest price is the way to go.
5. Wash your clothes in cold water.
I know, I know. . you were taught to wash whites in hot water, colors in warm water, and darks in cold water; however, you can really save some money by washing all clothes in cold water. Now, if the stomach virus hits your house, by all means, wash everything (and I do mean everything) in hot water. For the rest of the time, wash everything in cold water to save on your electric bill.
